Microchipping and desexing is mandatory* for South Australian cats, and owners must register this information in Dogs and Cats Online. Dogs and Cats Online is the state-wide database for dog and cat microchip, desexing and breeder registrations.
Each council oversees dog and cat registrations in their area. All councils charge dog registration fees to fund parks, containment facilities, animal management officers and more, but only some charge cat registration fees. Councils issue their fee notices in July each year and these must be paid by 31st August. Contact your council to find out if they have bylaws for cat registration fees, containment, curfews or limits on cat numbers which affect you and your cat.
You can access Dogs and Cats Online anytime to register a new cat’s microchip number, change your contact information or list your cat as lost. Keeping your information up to date is especially important if your cat goes missing because microchips offer the best form of identification and will help you reunite. Your cat can be scanned by council officers, vets or animal shelters who can locate you through Dogs and Cats Online.
